Common Sports Injuries We Treat

At Hutchinson Health, we can help alleviate the symptoms and discomfort for many common sports injuries using various physical therapy techniques. Some of the most common sports injuries we see at the clinic include:

The most prevalent sports injuries are those that occur when running or jogging.

Running and jogging injuries

Injuries or accidents that occur while running or jogging are among the most common sports injuries. You may notice reduced mobility in your knee or ankle, persistent pain while running or recurring pain whilst going about your daily activities. Common running injuries include Achilles tendon injury – your Achilles tendon is the tendon connecting the heel to the calf muscle, which can become inflamed or even tear when put under the stress of regular running. Shin splints is another common injury, and is the name given to inflammation of the tissues connecting the shin bone to muscle, typically characterised by tenderness and pain running across the shins. Runners are also prone to patellofemoral pain syndrome or “runner’s knee”, a repetitive injury caused by stress on the knee joint.

We will be able to accurately diagnose your running injury and give you the most appropriate treatment to get you back into running as soon as possible.

Sprains, strains and tightness

Sprains and strains can occur when stretching or exerting your body during physical activity. A strain refers to tearing or overly stretching the tendons and muscles. A sprain is when the same occurs to the ligaments. These types of injuries are incredibly common amongst individuals from all backgrounds, as they can occur due to physical activity or sports as well as everyday motions such as walking or working.

ACL and knee injuries

Your ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament is one of the ligaments that supports the knee joint. Tears and injuries to the ACL are common in sports and activities that involve stopping and starting, jumping or sudden changes in direction, such as football or rugby. Other common knee injuries include meniscus tears, which is a tear in the cartilage that cushions the knee, patellar tendonitis or “jumper’s knee”, and “runner’s knee” as mentioned earlier. Tears and injuries to the other supporting knee ligaments – although less common – can also occur.

Rotator cuff injuries

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles that surround the shoulder, supporting the shoulder joint when in movement and during physical activity. A rotator cuff injury is most common among sports and activities involving large shoulder movements, such as tennis, swimming or basketball.

Of course, sport might lead you to experience any of the other pain conditions we treat, such as back pain, neck pain and sciatica. We are able to give you an accurate diagnosis for whatever condition you are suffering from and get you back into action as quickly as possible.

How we can help you

Whether you suffer from one of the above injuries or live with persistent pain or discomfort, we here at Hutchinson Health pride ourselves on taking an individualised approach. We will work closely with you to tailor a bespoke treatment plan that suits you, helping you to reach your fitness goals and regain lost confidence.

During your first appointment, your clinician will discuss your symptoms with you and formulate a plan of action. This will include various physical therapy techniques such as spine and joint manipulation, soft tissue massage or trigger point therapy. You can read more about our therapies on our chiropractic and osteopathy pages.

Getting back into sport at the right pace is also crucial, to avoid further injuries caused by trying to do too much on muscles and joints that feel fine but are actually still weakened from injury. Our clinicians will work with you to give you advice on rehabilitation and reloading at the correct speed to ensure your return to sport is healthy and long-lasting.

Our team of Warren and Nathan have over 20 years of combined clinical experience. To find out more about what we offer and how we can help you get back to your best, book your appointment now. Alternatively, you can book a free 30-minute assessment to see how we can help you.
