Lifestyle Causes of Back Pain

Back pain is often due to poor posture as a result of our modern lifestyles. Many people spend much of their time sitting at a desk, driving, or sitting on an armchair or sofa in the evenings. Over time, these can all lead to postural problems which manifest as back pain.

Other lifestyle factors related to a busy life can also contribute to back pain, such as stress, not getting enough sleep, and not always being able to eat as well or exercise as often as we would like.

Why Choose Us

At Hutchinson Health we pride ourselves on a personal, individualised approach to your treatment. You’ll receive a full examination and accurate diagnosis, allowing you to understand the root causes of your pain, and allowing us to treat not just where it hurts, but why it hurts.

You’ll have time to discuss and ask questions, and will be able to start your treatment programme immediately.

Medical Causes of Back Pain

Back pain also has many medical causes. Sometimes the cause may be obvious to you, such as an injury you sustained whilst lifting a heavy object, or being accidentally hit on the back whilst playing sport.

Many chronic pain conditions can also lead to back pain as the body naturally tightens up to compensate for the pain, causing a pain reaction. Chronic conditions such as asthma or plantar fasciitis can cause compensatory reactions in the body, which can affect bodily alignment and lead to further pain.

Chiropractors and osteopaths are experts at diagnosing the root cause of your back pain, and helping to bring your body back into alignment and relieving your pain.

Self-Treatment for Back Pain

People treat back pain in many different ways. Painkillers are of course widely available, the problem being that they are really only masking the problem rather than helping to combat the cause of the pain. Heat or cold packs can also bring relief from back pain, and when used correctly can also help to release tight muscles and bring some therapeutic benefit.

Activities such as yoga and pilates, and various stretches and exercises, can also be of great benefit in bringing the spine back into alignment and helping to relieve pain. The only potential problem here is that the movements and stretches have not been prescribed for your particular pain issue, meaning they could potentially exacerbate your pain rather than making it better. An experienced physical therapist will be able to give you exercises that will target the cause of pain in your particular case, and tell you exactly which yoga and pilates movements will be of the greatest benefit to your unique physiology.

Back Pain and Pregnancy

Pregnancy is one of the biggest causes of back pain, as the weight of carrying the child pulls you forward, meaning the muscles of the lower back have to work harder to maintain your usual posture, and problems can occur as the body is pulled out of its normal alignment. Pregnancy hormones can also cause a softening of the ligaments in the spine, meaning problems like sciatica can become more likely. Looking after a small child can be just as hard on the spine, as frequently picking up or carrying the child, and bending over to pick toys, etc. up from the floor can all take their toll on the body.

Chiropractic and osteopathy do not use drugs and are safe treatments to have all the way through your pregnancy, helping you to stay functional and pain free.

Our Back Pain Treatments

Chiropractic and osteopathy are non-invasive physical therapies which use a wide range of techniques to bring your spine and posture back into alignment, release tense and tight muscles, and prevent problems recurring. These techniques include directly manipulating the spinal vertebrae with high velocity, low amplitude thrusts to push joints safely back into alignment, joint mobilisation, stretching, and a range of soft tissue techniques such as deep massage and myofascial release.

We are experts at understanding the spine and can help diagnose the root cause of your pain and make a lasting difference in its treatment. We are primary care practitioners, meaning if chiropractic or osteopathy are not the most appropriate treatment in your particular case, we are able to diagnose your problem and refer you to other services or for further tests.

Preventing Your Back Pain from Recurring

To really recover from back pain, we want to not just combat the pain right now, but to build better habits which can prevent the problem recurring in the future. We always aim to give you the tools and knowledge necessary to avoid future problems.

This might be as simple as recommending a particular type of orthotic shoe insole to help correct your posture, or a different kind of mattress. We can assess your seated position at work or when driving and make suggestions for any adaptations, such as a footrest or having your chair at a different height or angle, that could make a difference to your back pain. In addition, we will most likely give you bespoke stretches and exercises that can not only help your recovery whilst suffering from back pain, but help you to maintain a healthy spine once your treatment is finished.
