Sciatica Treatment: What Is It and How can we solve it?
You’ve probably heard of sciatica, a word which has become common in our daily language for describing how we feel when experiencing low back pain and leg pain, but do you know what it is?
Sciatica creates pain in the lower back, hips and legs and is caused by irritation, compression or inflammation of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body, running from the lower back, through the hips and buttocks, and down to the knee. Sciatica is a widespread complaint, with pain typically feeling like burning, electric shock or pins and needles.
We are a leading chiropractic and osteopathic clinic providing specialist treatment for sciatica and for related conditions such as the back, hip, and knee pain. We are easily accessible from the M27 J11/12 and in convenient reach of Fareham, Drayton, Knowle, Widley, Port Solent and the Portsmouth area. We offer a Free 30-Minute Initial Consultation, and our online system makes booking quick and easy.
Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve, running from your lower back to your knee, is irritated or compressed. This activates the nerve, causing pain anywhere along its path. It is estimated that around 40% of people will experience sciatica during their lifetime.
Sciatic pain normally affects only one side of the body and can vary from mild and infrequent irritation to severe and debilitating pain. An assessment with an experienced physical therapist is typically required to provide an accurate diagnosis, as sciatica is often confused with simple back or hip pain from other causes.
At Hutchinson Health we pride ourselves on a personal, individualised approach to your treatment. You’ll receive a full examination and accurate diagnosis, allowing you to understand the root causes of your pain, and allowing us to treat not just where it hurts, but why it hurts.
You’ll have time to discuss and ask questions, and will be able to start your treatment programme immediately.
The symptoms of sciatica are different for every person, but typically include:

The most common cause of sciatica is a herniated or slipped disc, which can create pressure on the nerve root. There are many other potential causes related to the spinal discs, including spinal stenosis, scoliosis, and spondylolisthesis.
Sciatica normally affects people in middle age and can also occur as a result of a wide range of lifestyle factors. These include things such as being overweight, lack of exercise, wearing high heels, carrying heavy loads, sleeping on a mattress that is too hard or soft, driving or sitting for long periods of time, having a very active or physical job, or an injury.
Sciatica is common during pregnancy. Although pregnancy does not lead to sciatica directly, certain hormones can cause a softening of the ligaments which hold the vertebrae together. At the same time, the baby’s weight and position can add pressure to the nerves and spine, making you more susceptible to sciatica, pinched nerves, and similar conditions.
Because the size and weight of the baby is the main contributing factor in pregnancy-related sciatica, you are more likely to develop sciatica towards the end of your pregnancy. Chiropractic and osteopathy are perfectly safe treatments for pregnancy and are often used to relieve pregnancy-related musculoskeletal pain. If you have any questions regarding our treatments and pregnancy, don’t hesitate to contact us.
Physical therapy treatments such as chiropractic and osteopathy are ideally suited to sciatica treatment. Unlike treatments such as painkillers or heat pads, chiropractic and osteopathic treatments can get to the root of your sciatica by correcting misalignment in the vertebrae or joints which have caused sciatica to develop.
We regularly treat people with sciatica using various proven physical therapy techniques. We will also show you how to perform bespoke stretches and exercises to help you recover in the quickest possible time and advise you on lifestyle factors such as posture, sleeping and sitting positions.

You’ve probably heard of sciatica, a word which has become common in our daily language for describing how we feel when experiencing low back pain and leg pain, but do you know what it is?
Sciatica is a very common complaint and can affect people of all ages, but the good news is that it can be effectively treated with manual therapy techniques provided by Chiropractors and Osteopaths.
Many people reasonably believe that they have a pinched nerve upon feeling sharp back pain. But in reality, it’s likely something different. In fact, a completely different medical condition may be responsible instead.
