Osteopathy is a physical therapy used to treat a wide range of problems which have their roots in musculoskeletal issues. It is a non-invasive treatment which does not use drugs, and works by stimulating the body’s natural healing mechanisms to return you quickly to full health. Osteopathy is a holistic therapy which considers the body as a whole, as the place where you are feeling pain may not be the root of the problem.
Osteopathy is well known for spinal manipulation, and osteopaths are experts in treating spinal and joint issues as well as anything to do with the musculoskeletal system. Osteopathy is an Allied Health Profession and many osteopaths also work in the NHS, in the musculoskeletal departments of hospitals.
Osteopathy can help with a wide range of different problems. People often seek osteopathic help for spine-related problems such as back pain and neck pain, but osteopaths are able to help with anything related to the musculoskeletal system, including sports injuries, repetitive injuries such as RSI, carpal tunnel, plantar fasciitis and tennis elbow, headaches, and chronic conditions such as arthritis, sciatica, and fibromyalgia.
Osteopaths are Primary Care Practitioners who are able to refer you to the correct service if osteopathy is not the most appropriate treatment for you. If you’re not sure whether osteopathy can help, feel free to contact us, or book a Free 30-Minute Consultation.
Osteopathy is well known for spinal and joint manipulations which treat problems by moving the joints of the spine and skeletal system into better alignment. Osteopaths also use a wide range of other physical therapy techniques, including soft tissue techniques – such as massage, trigger point therapy, and myofascial release – stretching, mobilisation, and Western acupuncture.
Osteopathy is a highly individualised treatment and your osteopath will use different techniques depending on the nature of the problem you are experiencing. At your first appointment, your osteopath will provide you with a professional diagnosis and explain to you the most appropriate treatment for your particular problem.
A professional consultation with no obligation
The particular techniques used in osteopathy depend on the condition you are experiencing, but spinal manipulation will typically form some part of an osteopathic treatment session. During spinal manipulation, your osteopath may ask you to sit or lie down in specific positions, and use quick, high velocity movements to bring your spine and joints into better alignment.
You may hear a cracking or popping sound during this treatment. This is safe and natural. It does not hurt and is no different to the sound you might hear if you crack your knuckles, or if your knee clicks when you stand up.
All osteopaths complete a minimum of 4 years training to degree level and are registered with and regulated by the General Osteopathic Council. Many osteopaths are additionally registered with the Institute of Osteopathy.
Osteopathy is a recognised Allied Health Profession and many osteopaths work in the NHS, in musculoskeletal departments of hospitals. Osteopaths are also Primary Care Practitioners, trained to be a first point of call for patients and able to refer them to other services or for further tests if osteopathy is not the right treatment for them.

At your first appointment, your osteopath will take a brief medical history and listen while you explain what has brought you to the clinic. They will then carry out a physical examination, both of the affected area and of your general posture and biomechanics, and ask you about any relevant lifestyle factors, for example your work, driving, and any sports or frequent lifting.
Your osteopath will typically give you a diagnosis at your first appointment, explaining the most appropriate course of treatment for your problem and how many sessions you are likely to need. You will normally receive treatment at the first session and should notice an improvement straight away. Your osteopath will also provide you with stretches and exercises you can perform at home to expedite your return to full health.
