History of Portchester Castle

Originally built as a Roman fort in the late 3rd century, Portchester Castle was part of the Saxon Shore defences designed to protect Britain from seaborne invasions. Its thick walls and square layout remain largely intact. The site was later used by the Normans, who transformed it into a medieval castle with a large keep and defensive towers. During the Hundred Years’ War, it played a key role in military campaigns, and in later centuries, it was used as a prison, notably housing thousands of French prisoners during the Napoleonic Wars.
