Headaches are divided into different types depending on their causes and symptoms. Whilst there are many clinical categories of headache, there are 3 types that chiropractors and osteopaths typically treat – tension headaches, cervicogenic (neck triggered) headaches, and migraines.
Tension headaches are often a result of stress, depression, anxiety or not enough sleep. Stress causes the muscles of the neck and head to contract, which in turn leads to a headache. Tension headaches are very common and most people will suffer from them at some time in their life.
A migraine is a recurring headache that causes moderate to severe throbbing and pulsating pain, at the front or on one side of the head. Some people have other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting or increased sensitivity to light or sound. Migraines are a lot more severe than tension headaches and can stop you carrying out your normal daily activities. They can also last a couple of hours or more.
A cervicogenic headache occurs when pain originates from a specific source in the neck and is referred up to the head. This pain is usually a steady ache or dull feeling, but the pain intensity can sometimes worsen. The pain is usually concentrated on one side of the neck, head, and/or face.
At your Free 30-Minute Consultation, we will be able to diagnose your headache symptoms and explain whether your headache can be treated with chiropractic and osteopathy, or if a different kind of treatment would be more appropriate for you.

Many people take over-the-counter medicines and painkillers for occasional, tension-type headaches. There is nothing at all wrong with taking the occasional paracetamol or aspirin, but if you find yourself regularly suffering from headaches, you might want to consider trying to address the underlying causes, or seeking professional treatment.
Begin by trying to understand the triggers for your headache. For example, you may find your headaches occur as a result of stress, prolonged screen usage, not getting enough sleep, or inadequate hydration. Trying to stay generally healthy, including a healthy diet and getting plenty of rest, may go a long way to improving your symptoms. You may also want to prevent eye strain, for example by ensuring your glasses or contact lenses are the correct prescription, or by increasing the size of the text on your phone or computer screen.

Osteopathic and chiropractic are a proven way to relieve the symptoms of tension headaches, cervicogenic headaches, and migraines.
Chiropractors and osteopaths are experts on spinal and skeletal alignment. We can identify any musculoskeletal factors which may be causing or contributing to your headaches, and relieve these imbalances using non-invasive manipulations or adjustments, relieving the pressure on the neck and head. Better alignment also allows the body to relax more easily and removes any blocks to healthy blood flow, encouraging healing and better function.
Chiropractors and osteopaths work holistically, meaning they consider the relationship between different parts of the musculoskeletal system and how they work together as a whole. It may be that issues in other areas of the body – such as tension in the shoulders or poor posture in the upper back – are contributing to your headaches, and we can diagnose and help to remedy these issues.
Chiropractors and osteopaths are Primary Care Practitioners, meaning we are trained to assess your symptoms and are able to refer you for further tests, including MRIs and other tests and scans, if your headache does not have a musculoskeletal basis or our therapies are not the most appropriate method of treatment in your particular case. We will give you a professional examination and diagnosis at your Free 30-Minute Initial Consultation.
