We are a leading south coast clinic providing chiropractic and osteopathic treatment for a range of conditions including back pain, neck pain, frozen shoulder, headaches, sciatica and more. The difference between chiropractic and osteopathy is one of the main questions that we are asked by people who are considering making an appointment.
There are some historical differences in terms of how the professions started, osteopathy was founded by Dr Andrew Still in 1872 and chiropractic by Daniel David Palmer, a student of Dr Still, in 1872.
The literature would generally show that the chiropractic profession is perceived to be more spinal based, and the osteopathic profession, while still spinal based, also treats visceral pain problems (caused by damage to or irritation of the internal organs) such as respiratory and digestive complaints.

Although there are differences, as musculoskeletal healthcare advances and more research evolves, evidence-based musculoskeletal practitioners are providing very similar treatments and treatment plans, so although there are a few differences between chiropractors and osteopaths, they are in fact very similar and both can help you with rehabilitation and recovery of most complaints. This is why you will often find the two professions working in the same clinic and helping patients with similar musculoskeletal complaints.
The main reason people choose one or the other tends, on the whole, to be a personal choice. A patient may have received chiropractic or osteopathic treatment in the past and found that they had good results and would like to stay with that profession. It may be that they found a particular practitioner very helpful and would like to book treatment from that person again, or often a practitioner may have been recommended by a family member or friend which leads to one choice or the other.
No matter which profession you choose at any clinic, make sure they are registered with the profession’s governing body – either the General Chiropractic Council or General Osteopathic Council. Here you will be able to search the practitioner and ensure that they have not only achieved the correct qualifications to become registered, but also that they are completing the Continuing Professional Development requirement to keep their knowledge up to date, and also that they have the correct insurance in place to treat you.

At Hutchinson Health, we also have a close personal philosophy in terms of treatment and how to best help patients. Both chiropractic and osteopathy can effectively help with low back, neck pain and headaches as well as a variety of other complaints.
Both professions will use a variety of hands-on techniques such as manipulation, mobilisation, massage, trigger point therapy, and rehabilitation exercises. Some clinicians may also include dry needling (Western acupuncture) as part of a treatment plan and may, if required, refer a patiemt for an x-ray or MRI. Treatment plans from osteopaths and chiropractors will be a package of care for each patient, not just spinal manipulation.
Both chiropractors and osteopaths at Hutchinson Health will take a whole-body approach to understand your injury and the reason why it has occurred, and explain the diagnosis/reasoning for both treatment and recovery.
If you are unsure whether chiropractic or osteopathy can help you, or you would simply just like to see the clinic and meet one of us prior to making an appointment, then you can book a Free-30 Minute Appointment at the clinic or contact us with any questions, and we will be happy to advise whether one treatment or the other is more appropriate in your particular case.
