Arthritis is a term for a number of conditions that cause joint inflammation, pain and stiffness. There are over 100 different types of arthritis, but the most common include:
Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, often developing with age, following an injury or due to overuse or repetitive strain. It occurs when the protective cartilage in the joints wears down, leading to symptoms like pain, stiffness in the affected joint, reduced range of motion, joint swelling and sometimes grinding or clicking sounds when moving. OA commonly affects the knees, hips, spine, hands and shoulders, making everyday activities like walking, climbing stairs or gripping objects difficult or painful.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system attacks the joints, leading to chronic inflammation. Symptoms can include joint pain and swelling (often in both hands, wrists, or feet), morning stiffness that lasts over an hour, fatigue, fever and weight loss. In severe cases, RA can even cause joint deformity. RA requires early intervention to prevent permanent joint damage.
Gout is caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood, which can lead to sudden and severe joint pain. It commonly affects the big toe, knees and ankles. Common symptoms that individuals suffering from the conditions may experience are intense, sharp pains in a single joint, swelling, redness and pain attacks that come on suddenly, often at night.
Psoriatic arthritis affects people with psoriasis, which is an autoimmune skin condition. It can cause joint pain and swelling, scaly inflamed skin patches, stiffness, especially in the morning and changes in the nails (pitting or separation from the nail bed). PsA can affect any joint in the body, including the spine, hands, and feet.

At Hutchinson Health, we take a holistic, multidisciplinary, hands-on approach to arthritis treatment, focusing on:
Our treatments are gentle, natural, and specifically tailored to your specific condition, needs and lifestyle.
Osteopathy is a manual therapy that focuses on restoring the body’s natural balance and movement. For arthritis, our osteopathic treatment can help to improve joint mobility through gentle mobilisation techniques. It can reduce muscle tension around affected joints, enhance blood flow and lymphatic drainage to reduce swelling and encourage natural healing by improving overall body function. Techniques include soft tissue massage, myofascial release and joint manipulation to improve movement and relieve pain.
Chiropractic treatment focuses on spinal alignment and joint function to alleviate arthritis symptoms. Our chiropractors use a number of techniques to treat arthritis, including spinal and joint adjustments to restore movement and reduce pressure on affected areas, postural correction to relieve strain on weight-bearing joints and joint mobilisation techniques to maintain flexibility and reduce stiffness. We will also work to optimise nerve function in order to enhance communication between the brain and body. Regular chiropractic care can help prevent further joint deterioration and improve overall mobility.

You’ve probably heard of sciatica, a word which has become common in our daily language for describing how we feel when experiencing low back pain and leg pain, but do you know what it is?
Sciatica is a very common complaint and can affect people of all ages, but the good news is that it can be effectively treated with manual therapy techniques provided by Chiropractors and Osteopaths.
Many people reasonably believe that they have a pinched nerve upon feeling sharp back pain. But in reality, it’s likely something different. In fact, a completely different medical condition may be responsible instead.
